Your guide to getting the most out of coaching

Updated: May 4, 2020

Your coach is your guide in the process of journeying with you to your desired destination.

To get the most from coaching it not only takes a great coach, it also takes a great client!

Amazing results often have more to do with the client than the coach.

A good coach knows that their job is not to teach or give advice. Through presence, active listening, powerful questions and valuable feedback a coach will help clients transform personally and professionally. The conversation between coach and client is there to promote the clients learning. Good coaches are trained and skilled to help clients achieve amazing results so long as the client is willing to do the work.

When picking a coach make sure you imagine yourself working with this person and observe if it feels comfortable as this person will also need to challenge you. Present a topic you know you really want to work on or an area of transformation so that it is clear. You don't have to worry about how to achieve it, that's my job but you do need to know what it is you want to achieve? Coaching involves talking about sensitive areas and things you may not want your coach to know about you. This is great because the coaching environment is a safe and confidential space for you to explore and discover things you may not be able to do with others. Working through vulnerabilities and creating awareness and more clarity is one of the great benefits of coaching. Nobody's perfect but everyone has imperfections and those imperfections can be worked on :).

Coaching takes time. It is not for people who are looking for a quick fix or a given solution, and if that's what you're looking for then you're probably better off seeing a consultant. Artful coaching is being able to be in the space of knowing and not knowing between where you are now and where you want to be. Giving yourself time and the tension to sit with these thoughts and feelings will give you a deeper understanding of why it is so important to you and once you've figured that out I assure you you'll be wanting to make the change!

When you've moved into the mindset of knowing it's time to start "actioning". You've done your reflecting and reached you're knowing and now you're ready to action new leanings. Insights without actions are just interesting ideas. It is only when you action something that you will get the results.

Remember as a client you are always the captain of your own ship. You may have crew to help you on your way but ultimately you are in charge of your final destination.

Good luck,

Kristina
